Natalie McMasters (aka Nattie) is a detective for the new millennium.
She’s a pre-law student at State University in a southern capital city, 20 years old and 5’1” tall with shoulder-length blonde hair. She’s way cute! At the start of the series, she is living in a student rental house with her roommates Kwan and Fields. To put herself through school, she is also a private detective trainee at the 3M Detective Agency, which is run by her uncle Amos Murdoch.
Nattie’s duties at 3M consist mostly of sitting in a car, watching the homes or businesses of people who have filed workman’s compensation claims. Her job is to confirm whether the injury being claimed is real or fraudulent. If she sees something suspicious, like a subject with an alleged back injury hauling a heavy trash can to the curb, she’ll snap a quick picture for Amos, who’ll turn it over to the insurance company and collect his fee.
It’s a pretty boring job, but perfect for a college student because she can spend most of her time studying while waiting for the subject to do something. Of course, a boring job isn’t a great beginning for a mystery series. But what if Nattie sees something that she shouldn’t during a stakeout…
That’s the premise for the first Natalie McMasters story, Stakeout, which you’ll find on this website.
